MCX Holidays 2026, Is MCX Open Today, Complete Trading Holiday List

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) has published its official holiday list for 2026, with 15 trading holidays falling on weekdays across the year. On these days, commodity trading in gold, silver, crude oil, natural gas, base metals, and agricultural products is either fully or partially suspended. Unlike bank holidays, MCX follows its own distinct calendar regulated by SEBI, with an additional split between morning and evening trading sessions that can make certain holidays partial rather than full closures.

What Is MCX and How Does It Work?

MCX, or the Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited, is India's largest commodity derivatives exchange, established in 2003 and regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) since 2016. It offers trading in metals (gold, silver, copper, aluminium, zinc, nickel), energy (crude oil, natural gas), and agricultural commodities (pepper, cardamom, turmeric, cotton, and others). MCX operates Monday to Friday in two sessions:

Morning Session: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Evening Session: 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM (extended to 11:55 PM during US daylight saving time, typically November to March)

MCX is closed on all Saturdays and Sundays. On certain holidays, one session may be closed while the other remains open, making the MCX holiday list more nuanced than a simple open/closed calendar.

Note: Several holidays in 2026, including Maha Shivaratri, Eid al-Fitr, Independence Day, and Diwali Laxmi Pujan, fall on weekends when MCX is already closed, so they do not result in additional weekday trading pauses.

Full Holidays vs Partial Holidays: What Traders Need to Know

Full MCX Holidays (both sessions closed): Republic Day, Good Friday, Maharashtra Day, Gandhi Jayanti, Eid al-Zuha, Diwali Balipratipada, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas.

Partial MCX Holidays (morning closed, evening open): Holi, Dr B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti, and certain other festival dates where global commodity markets remain active in the evening.

New Year's Day Special: On 1 January 2026, the morning session is open but the evening session is closed, linked to global commodity market closures.

Diwali Muhurat Trading: On Diwali Laxmi Pujan (8 November 2026, a Sunday), MCX conducts a special symbolic Muhurat Trading session in the evening. The exact timing is notified by MCX in a circular closer to the date.

Is MCX Open Today? How to Check

To check whether MCX is open today or tomorrow, traders should refer to the official MCX circular on the MCX India website (mcxindia.com). The final holiday list is published by MCX at the beginning of each year, and any ad-hoc closures are communicated through exchange circulars. MCX holidays do not always match NSE/BSE equity market holidays, so always cross-reference the commodity market calendar separately.

MCX vs Bank Holidays: Key Differences

Aspect | MCX Holiday | Bank Holiday
