Makar Sankranti / Pongal (14 January): Celebrates the sun's northward journey and the harvest season. Known as Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Magh Bihu in Assam, this festival marks fresh beginnings, kite flying, and the cooking of the sweet Pongal dish in earthen pots.
Maha Shivaratri (15 February): The "Great Night of Shiva", observed with overnight vigils, fasting, temple prayers, and offerings of bael leaves and milk to the Shiva Linga. One of the most widely observed fasts across all Hindu communities.
Holi (4 March): India's festival of colours and spring. Holika Dahan (bonfire ritual) on the evening of 3 March precedes the colour celebration on 4 March. Celebrated with gulal, water, and festive food across most Indian states.
Eid-ul-Fitr (approx. 21 March): Marking the end of Ramadan, Eid-ul-Fitr is observed with prayers, community gatherings, feasting, and the sharing of gifts and sweets (Eidi). Exact date subject to moon sighting, may vary by one day across regions.
Vaisakhi / Baisakhi (14 April): The Sikh New Year and harvest festival of Punjab, also celebrated as Tamil New Year, Vishu (Kerala), and Bihu (Assam) on the same date. A day of major regional significance across four distinct traditions.
Janmashtami (4 September): Celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. Observed with midnight prayers, fasting, Dahi Handi competitions, and devotional singing. Major celebrations in Mathura, Vrindavan, and Dwarka.
