7 Days Loan App: Real Cost, Risks and Safer Options

You require a couple of thousand rupees for the payday, and an application claims it will loan you the cash for 7 days. The short duration of stay implies that it's not harmful. When considering a one-week loan, it is useful to be aware of three points: why legitimate 7-day loans are uncommon; what a one-week loan actually costs when all fees are added up; and how to determine if an app is connected to a regulated lender.

This guide is not a ranking of Apps. No terms for any of these 7-day products were verified with RBI's list of lending apps and lender's own Key Fact Statement. A list with ranked numbers, without verifying them would be a shot in the dark and it would be a lot more expensive than the loan.

Why genuine 7-day loan apps are hard to find

They are not allowed on Google Play. Google Play's Financial Services policy says it does not allow apps that promote personal loans which must be repaid in full in 60 days or less. In India, the same policy means that the personal loan applications will need to be listed by RBI on the list of Digital Lending Apps of regulated entities.

If the app is promising a loan that will be fully repaid in 7 or 15 days, ask how they're reaching you. It could be shared outside the Play Store as an APK file or via a link, or it may be misrepresenting its product. Both are cause for concern.

RBI rules apply to every digital loan from a regulated lender. Under the Reserve Bank of India (Digital Lending) Directions, 2025, banks and NBFCs lending through apps must:

  • give you a Key Fact Statement (KFS) before you sign, showing the total cost of the loan, including the Annual Percentage Rate (APR);

  • pay the loan directly into your bank account and take repayments directly into their own account, not through a third party's account;

  • give you a cooling-off period of at least one day to exit the loan by repaying the principal and the proportionate cost. The lender sets the exact period and must disclose any exit fee in the KFS;

  • not access your contacts, call logs, files or media. One-time access to the camera, microphone or location is allowed only for KYC, and only with your consent;

  • name a grievance redressal officer, and tell you the recovery agent's details by email or SMS before that agent contacts you.

An app that skips these steps is not following the rules that apply to regulated lenders.

What a 7-day loan really costs

Short loans appear to be cheap as the interest for a few days is small. The price is primarily based on the fees. Often, they are deducted from the amount received and GST is charged on the deducted amount.

The following are examples only. They are numbers assumed by them so you can view how the maths plays out, and not terms of any particular app. You can find your own numbers in the KFS.

In this case, you borrowed ₹5000 with a 36% interest rate. Only interest is collected on the days that you are borrowing. There is a 10% processing fee (deducted from your proceeds) and 18% GST added to the processing fee (also deducted from your proceeds). All are paid for in a single payment on the due date.

Annualised cost = total cost / amount received × 365 (rounded) / days. This is a straightforward annualisation (also without compounding) and the lender's APR method can yield a slightly different number. All values have been rounded to the nearest rupee.

There are three points to note:

1. The first one is that you get less than you loan. On a "₹5,000 loan" you get ₹4,410 but repay ₹5,035 or more.

2. The shorter the loan, the larger the effective rate, as the fee will be virtually the same, regardless of the term. The rate is calculated at a much higher annual rate when the same ₹590 is paid in 7 days as compared to 90 days.

3. The cost is multiplied if the loan is rolled over. If you are unable to pay the loan off on day 7 and borrow another short term loan to settle the one you borrowed before, then you will incur a new cost for each loan. Two or three rounds can actually be more expensive than a longer loan that you would have at the start.

What about "7 to 15 days loan app free" offers?

A loan with no cost at all is very rare. "0% interest" offers usually still carry a processing or platform fee. Using the same method, a ₹3,000 loan at 0% interest with a ₹300 fee plus ₹54 GST puts ₹2,646 in your account. Repaying ₹3,000 after 7 days works out to an annualised cost of about 698%.

Before you accept any offer, read the KFS and compare the APR. Don't compare the headline interest rate.

How to check a loan app before you install it

  1. Check the lender’s name. The app and its store listing should clearly mention the bank or NBFC that is actually providing the loan. If you can’t identify a regulated lender, don’t go any further.

  2. Check the RBI’s list of digital lending apps. You can find this list on the RBI website under the Citizen’s Corner section. It includes apps that regulated lenders have reported as being associated with them. However, the RBI clarifies that the information comes from lenders themselves and is not independently verified. So, use the list as an initial check rather than treating it as a guarantee of safety.

  3. Download apps only from official app stores. Before installing, check that the developer’s name matches the lender or its officially declared partner.

  4. Read the Key Fact Statement (KFS) carefully. Before accepting the loan, make sure you understand the amount you’ll actually receive, the APR, the repayment due date, all applicable fees and any penalty charges.

  5. Pay attention to app permissions. Be cautious if a lending app asks for access to your contacts, photo gallery or call logs. Under RBI rules, such requests are a major red flag.

Red flags:

Money demanded upfront as a "processing", "verification" or "insurance" fee before the loan is paid out

No KFS, or a KFS that appears only after you've accepted

Repayment to a personal UPI ID or a third party's account

Pressure to decide within minutes

Threats, or messages to your contacts, if a payment is late

Safer options when you need money for a short time

The right option depends on how urgently you need the money and how soon you can repay it. Before opting for a 7-day loan app, consider these alternatives first:

  • A salary advance from your employer. Some companies offer salary advances at a low cost or even free of charge. Check with your HR team to see if this is available.

  • Your credit card’s interest-free period. If you can pay off the full bill by the due date, this could be a useful option for purchases. Avoid withdrawing cash using your credit card, though, as it usually comes with fees and interest from the very first day.

  • A loan or overdraft against your fixed deposit. If you have a fixed deposit, borrowing against it is generally cheaper than taking an unsecured loan.

  • A personal loan with a longer repayment period. Consider getting one from a regulated lender. A longer tenure means smaller EMIs and less pressure on your monthly budget. If you plan to repay the loan early, check the prepayment or foreclosure charges in the Key Fact Statement (KFS) beforehand.

  • Borrowing from family or friends. If this is an option, agree on a clear repayment date from the beginning to avoid misunderstandings later.

What to Do If a Loan App Is Already Harassing You

  • Don’t share any more personal information or transfer money to new accounts just to stop the calls or threats.

  • Keep all evidence safe. Take screenshots of messages, save your call logs and payment receipts, and note down the app’s name and store listing.

  • Report threats or fraud. You can file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or call the cybercrime helpline at 1930. You should also consider filing a police complaint.

  • Contact the lender’s grievance redressal officer. If the loan is provided by a regulated bank or NBFC, raise your complaint with its grievance redressal officer first. If you don’t receive a response within 30 days, or you’re dissatisfied with the response, you can escalate the matter through the RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme at RBI CMS.

  • Report apps that aren’t linked to a regulated lender. If the app has no association with a regulated lender, you can submit a complaint through the RBI’s Sachet portal.

Frequently asked questions

Are 7-day loan apps legal in India?

Lending is legal when a bank or NBFC regulated by RBI does it under RBI's rules. A short tenure is not illegal by itself. However, Google Play does not allow personal loan apps whose loans must be repaid in full within 60 days, so a 7-day loan app is hard to square with that policy. Check the lender's name and RBI's list of digital lending apps before you borrow.

Is there a list of 7-day loan apps I can trust?

We have not published one because we could not verify any 7-day product's terms. RBI's list of digital lending apps is the official place to check whether an app is associated with a regulated lender. Even then, read the KFS before you accept a loan.

Can I cancel a digital loan after taking it?

Yes. Under RBI's Digital Lending Directions, regulated lenders must offer a cooling-off period of at least one day. During it you can exit by repaying the principal and the proportionate cost, plus any one-time exit fee disclosed in the KFS.

Why did I receive less money than the loan amount?

Processing fees and the GST on them are often deducted before the money is paid out. The KFS should show the net amount you'll receive.

Is a 7-day loan cheaper than a longer loan?

In rupees you may pay a little less, but the effective cost is usually much higher, because fees are spread over very few days. If you might need to roll the loan over, a longer tenure often costs less overall.
