How the 2nd and 4th Saturday Rule Works

Following a Reserve Bank of India directive that came into effect in 2015, all scheduled and non-scheduled banks in India, private sector, public sector (PSU), cooperative, and Regional Rural Banks, close their branches on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. The rule applies uniformly across all states and union territories. This was introduced to give bank staff a consistent two-day weekend on alternate weeks.

Banks remain open all day on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays, and on a 5th Saturday when it occurs.

What works on a 2nd/4th Saturday bank holiday:

  • UPI payments (Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, all work normally)
  • NEFT transfers
  • IMPS transfers (24×7, including holidays)
  • Mobile banking and internet banking
  • ATM cash withdrawals and card transactions
  • NACH auto-debit (EMI deductions), processed on the next working day if due date falls on a holiday

What does NOT work on a 2nd/4th Saturday bank holiday:

  • RTGS (Real Time Gross Settlement) transfers, only processed on banking working days
  • Physical cheque deposits and clearance under the Cheque Truncation System (CTS)
  • Branch services: cash deposits, account opening, DD issuance, document submission for loans

What Happens When a 2nd/4th Saturday Falls on a Festival Holiday?

If a gazetted festival holiday, Diwali, Eid, Holi, for example, falls on a 2nd or 4th Saturday, the bank is closed for both reasons. This does not create an extra holiday. The day simply has two designations, but the closure is the same single day.

This does matter for planning: if a festival Monday follows a 4th Saturday and Sunday, you can end up with a three-day branch closure. The March 26–29, 2026 stretch (Ram Navami Thursday, Friday, 4th Saturday, Sunday) is an example worth noting.
