Types of Bank Holidays in India

The Reserve Bank of India classifies bank holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. There are four categories:

National Holidays, Three dates observed by every bank, every state, every year: Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti. No exceptions.

Central Government Gazetted Holidays, Observed by most banks across most states. Includes major festivals like Holi, Good Friday, Eid-ul-Fitr, Diwali, and Christmas. Some are observed differently or on different dates in certain states.

State Government Holidays, Each state government notifies its own list of bank holidays for festivals specific to that region. A holiday observed in Maharashtra (like Gudi Padwa) may not be a holiday in Tamil Nadu on the same day.

Second and Fourth Saturday Rule, A uniform RBI directive that applies to all scheduled and non-scheduled banks nationally. Introduced in 2015 to provide banking staff with a structured alternate-week weekend.

If Your EMI or Loan Due Date Falls on a Bank Holiday

This is one of the most searched but least answered questions about bank holidays.

EMI auto-debit: Most lenders use the National Automated Clearing House (NACH) system to debit EMIs. NACH does not process on bank holidays. If your EMI due date falls on a holiday, including a 2nd/4th Saturday, the debit typically executes on the next working day. This is not a default, but you should ensure your account has adequate balance from the day before.

Loan disbursal: If you are expecting a loan disbursal on a bank holiday, the transfer will be delayed to the next working day. For time-sensitive needs, apply and complete your KYC earlier in the week to avoid the queue.

Cheque-based repayment: Physical cheques presented on a bank holiday are cleared on the next working day under the Cheque Truncation System. Post-dated cheques (PDCs) fall under the same rule.

CreditMitra's digital process is not affected: Pre-approved loan offers, CIBIL score checks, and loan comparisons on CreditMitra work through 100% digital channels with no branch dependency, available any day, including bank holidays.
