What is Pongal? {#pongal-about}
Pongal is a four-day harvest festival celebrated primarily in Tamil Nadu, marking the sun's northward journey (Uttarayan) and thanksgiving to the Sun God, Surya, for a bountiful harvest. The name derives from the Tamil word meaning "to boil over", a reference to the ritual of boiling new rice in milk until it overflows, symbolising abundance and prosperity. Pongal is the first major festival of the Tamil calendar year and is considered deeply auspicious for new beginnings, including purchases of gold, vehicles, and property.
Bhogi Pongal, Day 1 {#bhogi-pongal}
Bhogi Pongal, the first day of the festival, is observed in honour of Lord Indra, the god of rain and clouds whose blessings enable the harvest. On Bhogi, households discard old and broken items into a ceremonial bonfire made of wood and dried cow dung cakes, a ritual of renewal and letting go. Homes are swept and decorated with Kolam patterns drawn in rice flour paste, and mango leaves are hung at entrances as a symbol of prosperity.
Thai Pongal / Surya Pongal, Day 2 {#thai-pongal}
Thai Pongal, also called Surya Pongal, is the primary day of the festival and a gazetted bank holiday in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. It coincides with Makar Sankranti across India, the day the sun transitions into the zodiac sign Makara (Capricorn), marking the beginning of Uttarayan. On this day, fresh rice is boiled in new clay pots with milk and jaggery and offered to the Sun God at sunrise. The overflowing of the pot is the auspicious moment of Pongal.
Mattu Pongal / Thiruvalluvar Day, Day 3 {#mattu-pongal}
Mattu Pongal is the third day, dedicated to the worship of cattle, specifically cows and oxen, whose labour is central to the agricultural cycle. Animals are bathed, decorated with flowers and coloured powder, and offered the Pongal rice preparation. Thiruvalluvar Day, a Tamil Nadu state holiday observed on the same date, commemorates the ancient Tamil poet and philosopher Thiruvalluvar, author of the Tirukkural. Both observances are gazetted bank holidays in Tamil Nadu.
Kaanum Pongal / Uzhavar Thirunal, Day 4 {#kaanum-pongal}
Kaanum Pongal, the final day, is a day for family gatherings and outings, the word "Kaanum" means "to view" or "to visit." Leftover food from the previous days is placed on a banana leaf outdoors along with sugarcane, betel leaves, and lime, and women perform rituals praying for the wellbeing of their brothers. In Tamil Nadu, this day is also observed as Uzhavar Thirunal (Farmers' Day), recognising the contribution of farmers to the state's prosperity.
Thiruvalluvar Day {#thiruvalluvar-day}
Thiruvalluvar Day is a state holiday in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry that honours the revered Tamil poet-philosopher Thiruvalluvar. Though it falls on 15 January and coincides with Mattu Pongal, it is a separately declared gazetted holiday and applies to all banks, government offices, and institutions in Tamil Nadu regardless of Pongal observance.
