Onam 2026: Thiruvonam Date and Bank Holiday Details

Onam 2026, Kerala's grandest harvest festival, has its main day, Thiruvonam, falling on Wednesday, 26 August 2026. The ten-day festival begins with Atham on 16 August and Kerala observes four consecutive public holidays from First Onam on 25 August through Fourth Onam on 28 August. Banks, government offices, and most businesses across Kerala remain closed during this stretch, making it one of the longest holiday clusters of the year in the state.

Looking for Onam 2025 dates? Thiruvonam 2025 was observed on 5 September. This page covers the confirmed Onam 2026 date and holiday calendar.

What Is Onam and What Does It Celebrate?

Onam is Kerala's most important festival, celebrated by Malayalis across all communities, Hindu, Christian, and Muslim, regardless of religious background. The festival marks the annual homecoming of the legendary King Mahabali, remembered as a just and generous ruler whose reign is considered a golden age of equality and prosperity in Kerala. According to legend, the gods, threatened by Mahabali's popularity, sent Lord Vishnu in his Vamana avatar to reclaim the earth from him; Vishnu, however, granted Mahabali the boon of returning to visit his people once a year, and it is this annual visit that Onam celebrates. The festival is marked by elaborate Pookalam floral carpets that grow larger each day, the grand Onam Sadya feast of around 26 dishes served on a banana leaf, Vallamkali snake boat races, and Thiruvathirakali dance performances.

Onam 2026 Date: Kerala Public Holiday Calendar

Date | Day | Holiday | Region
25 August 2026 | Tuesday | First Onam (Uthradom) | Kerala
26 August 2026 | Wednesday | Thiruvonam (main day) | Kerala
27 August 2026 | Thursday | Third Onam | Kerala
28 August 2026 | Friday | Fourth Onam | Kerala

Note: Thiruvonam on 26 August is the most significant day of the festival, when King Mahabali is believed to visit his people, but all four days from First to Fourth Onam are declared public holidays in Kerala.

Is Onam a Bank Holiday in Kerala in 2026?

Date | Day | Holiday | Bank Closure Status
25 August 2026 | Tuesday | First Onam | Banks closed in Kerala
26 August 2026 | Wednesday | Thiruvonam | Banks closed in Kerala under the RBI's Negotiable Instruments Act holiday list
27 August 2026 | Thursday | Third Onam | Banks closed in Kerala
28 August 2026 | Friday | Fourth Onam | Banks closed in Kerala

With Onam 2026 spanning a four-day midweek stretch from Tuesday to Friday, Kerala residents will effectively have their bank branches closed for the entire week, making it the year's longest banking pause in the state.

Onam brings new clothes, the grand Sadya feast, gifting, and travel, right when your bank branch is closed for four straight days. CreditMitra's short-term personal loans can be applied for entirely online, so festive expenses don't have to wait for the branch to reopen.

What Works and What Doesn't During Onam Bank Holidays

Service | Available During Onam?
UPI (Google Pay, PhonePe, BHIM) | Yes, 24/7
IMPS transfers | Yes, 24/7
NEFT transfers | Yes, 24/7
ATM withdrawals | Yes, 24/7
Mobile and internet banking | Yes
RTGS transfers | No, resumes next working day
Cheque clearance (CTS) | No, resumes next working day
Branch services (cash deposit, DD, documents) | No, branch closed
NACH EMI auto-debit | Processed on the next working day if due date falls within the Onam holidays

What Happens If Your EMI Is Due During Onam?

If your personal loan, gold loan, or credit card EMI due date falls anywhere between 25 and 28 August 2026, the NACH auto-debit is typically processed on the next working day rather than being skipped. This is a routine processing delay and is not automatically treated as a default. However, your account still needs sufficient balance on the day the debit actually goes through; if it fails due to insufficient funds, it can be reported as a missed payment and may affect your CIBIL score. Given the four-day closure, it is especially important to keep your EMI amount ready in your account well before 25 August.

Onam Travel and Festive Planning

Onam is one of the busiest travel and shopping periods in Kerala, with families returning home, new Onakkodi clothes being bought, and elaborate Sadya feasts being planned. Because bank branches remain shut for four consecutive days, it is worth arranging any short-term funds you might need for travel, shopping, or gifting well ahead of 25 August.

Need quick funds to cover Onam travel, shopping, or the Sadya feast? CreditMitra's short-term personal loans are designed for exactly this kind of festive, time-sensitive need, with a fully online application and fast disbursal, so a four-day bank holiday doesn't have to slow you down.
