Diwali Corridor, November 8 to 11

Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday, November 8 (Kartika Amavasya). Because the festival date is a weekly off, the closure pattern differs from years when Diwali falls on a weekday. The observed bank holiday shifts to Monday, and the surrounding festival days create a staggered closure only in select regions.

November 8 (Sunday), Diwali

The festival day itself. Banks are already closed for the weekly off. In Tamil Nadu, this date is observed as Naraka Chaturdashi, the state's primary Diwali celebration, but since it falls on a Sunday, there is no separate bank closure impact.

November 9 (Monday), Diwali Observed

The main bank closure day. Banks close at most RBI centres across India. Confirmed closures per the RBI holiday matrix include:

Some cities that are not in the confirmed list: Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala), Panaji (Goa). Depending on regional tradition, these centres may have different dates for Diwali celebrations or may choose not to designate a separate closure for the day in the year, if Diwali falls on a Sunday. Check with your branch if you are in these states.

On November 10 (Tuesday) Govardhan Puja / Bali Pratipada is observed.

At four western centres banks are closing.

• The celebration of the Gujarat New Year in Ahmedabad is known as “Gujarat's Bestu Varas”.

• Belapur (Maharashtra)

• Mumbai (Maharashtra)

• Nagpur (Maharashtra)

In Gujarat and Maharashtra this is three closure days (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday), due to Diwali. Other Indian banks will be reopened on Tuesday. 

November 11 (Wednesday), Bhai Dooj

Bhai Dooj, also known as Kartik Shukla Dwitiya is being celebrated on Wednesday, November 11. On this date, the Ahmedabad centre is closed in accordance with the matrix of the RBI holiday, for Vikram Samvat New Year. BankBazaar has also included Bhai Dooj in the list of festivals for Gujarat, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh, but for Ahmedabad, the RBI has confirmed it at the centre level.

This will be the first time Gujarat's banks have closed for four days (Sunday to Wednesday), the longest continuous Diwali closure in the country.

Chhath Puja, November 12 to 16

The four-day Chhath Puja festival spans November 12 to 16 in 2026:

Chhath is the most important ritual of the occasion that takes place at the evening sun offering (Sandhya Arghya) on Sunday, November 15, which is a weekly off. The sunrise offering on the last day, Usha Arghya is on Monday, November 16, which is a bank holiday in Bihar.

The Bihar banks are closed for three days from 2nd Saturday (November 14) till Monday (November 16) along with. November 16 could also be a Chhath Puja holiday in Jharkhand, though the details of the same are not available in the current RBI matrix data for Ranchi.

This year the bank closure effect of Chhath Puja does not exist in any of the states except Bihar and Jharkhand. 

Guru Nanak Jayanti, November 24 (Tuesday)

Kartik Purnima (full moon) Tuesday, November 24 is Guru Nanak's 557th birth anniversary. It is a gazetted holiday and all banks are closed in most centres of India.

The confirmed closures are in Ahmedabad, Agartala, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, and Shimla.

The available centre-level data does not include the southern centres not confirmed (Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, Panaji, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada). Guru Nanak Jayanti is a DoPT closed holiday (applicable to Central Government Offices) but state RBI Notification may vary. In the south, look through your bank's calendar.

Kartik Purnima (Dev Diwali) is also a bathing festival in Varanasi and other pilgrimage centres, but not a bank holiday; it also falls on the day of Guru Teg Bahadur Martyrdom Day in Punjab and is also not a bank holiday.

Kannada 16th century poet-saint Kanakadasa's birthday. It's bank holiday at the centre in Bengaluru, Karnataka. After Guru Nanak Jayanti on Tuesday and the 4th Saturday on November 28, there's a pattern to the Karnataka closures for the remainder of the week: Tuesday (Nov 24) → open Wed-Thu → closed Friday (Nov 27) → closed Saturday (Nov 28) → closed Sunday (Nov 29).

State Foundation Days, Nov. 1 (Sunday)

A number of states celebrate their own statehood on November 1:

• Karnataka: Kannada Rajyotsava

• Haryana: Haryana Day

• The day when Puducherry is liberated by the Union of India is known as Liberation Day or De Jure Transfer Day.

• In Manipur, Kut Festival is also celebrated on this day.In Manipur, this day is celebrated as Kut Festival also.

None of these make a special bank holiday on Sunday, 1st November. No observed Monday holidays for these foundation days. 

Saturday Rule in November 2026

November 2026 has four Saturdays with no 5th Saturday. Under the Saturday rule (Gazette Notification S.O. 2285, August 20, 2015), only the 2nd and 4th Saturdays are bank holidays. The 1st and 3rd Saturdays are regular working days.

Note that November 7 (1st Saturday) falls the day before Diwali. Banks are open on this date. Some employers may grant a half-day or early closure, but the RBI calendar does not prescribe one.

What pauses: Cheque clearing (CTS) only works on a working day. If you have a holiday scheduled for auto-debits, they will normally be processed the following working day. The closure days include in-branch services, counter transactions, are not available on closure days, are not available locker access, demand drafts.

The busiest time for ATM withdrawals is Diwali. Lack of cash can be a problem, especially with a few consecutive closure days. If you plan to make cash withdrawals in Gujarat, make sure you do it before the 4-day closure on Nov 8–11.

The Diwali time is the most variable with numbers of consecutive closure days ranging from 2 days (most of India) to 4 days (Gujarat). Please check with your local branch for service dates between November 8th and 11th.
