State-Wise Bank Holidays 2026
There is no uniformity in the holiday calendar in India among all banks. Although national holidays such as Republic Day and Independence Day are celebrated nationwide, other holiday notifications are given by states as per the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
The Reserve Bank of India releases the holiday calendar based on regional centres of RBI (about 29 cities), while the state governments declare more holidays for the banks within their states. This implies that the overall number of bank holidays and dates vary from state to state.
Other than state specific holidays, the following bank holidays apply to all the banks in India:
Sunday of every week (52 days in 2026)
2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month (24 days in 2026)
Bank holidays due to festivals/public holidays include the above days.
Dates marked with an asterisk (*) are Muslim festivals as per the Hijri calendar. These are tentative and may be shifted by 1 or 2 days as per the official sighting of the moon.
Saturday Banking Rule
All bank branches in India follow a uniform Saturday schedule since September 1, 2015:
This rule applies uniformly across all states and is not repeated in the individual state sections below.
If a separate holiday (such as a festival or national holiday) falls on a working Saturday (1st, 3rd, or 5th), the bank closes for that holiday. For example, Independence Day (August 15, 2026) falls on a 3rd Saturday, banks close for Independence Day, not because of the Saturday rule.
