Following the death of Maharaja Chandkirti in 1886, there was a conflict among the princes for succession, which paved the way for the British to act against the independent princely state of Manipur. The Manipuri troops fought bravely but were finally defeated. On 13 August 1891, Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit Singh, popularly known as "Lion of Manipur", and Thangal General were publicly hanged by the British at Pheidapung area of Imphal now named as Bir Tikendrajit Park. Others who had taken their stand with the patriots such as Pukhramba Kajao, Niranjan Subedar, Chirai Naga, were also shot dead for their patriotic efforts. The people of Manipur commemorate 13 August as Patriots' Day every year by offering floral tribute at Bir Tikendrajit Park and other memorial sites to pay homage to these sacrifices.
