August Month Holidays 2026: Complete List

The following are non-working days in August 2026 across most of India: 5 Sundays, 2 Saturday closures, Independence Day and Eid-e-Milad. The count increases to 10 or more for states with bank holidays like Raksha Bandhan, Onam or regional bank holidays.

A special date, Independence Day (15th August) is a 3rd Saturday. The 3rd Saturday is a working day, except for the national holiday, which means that banks are still closed. In August, there is also a 5th Saturday (29th) that is a normal working day.

Independence Day on a 3rd Saturday

August 15, 2026 is a 3rd Saturday. According to the 2nd/4th Saturday rule (Gazette Notification S.O. 2285, 20 August 2015), the 3rd Saturday will be a normal working day for banks. But Independence Day is a gazetted national holiday, banks will be closed, irrespective of the type of Saturday.

It's the same as with any festival that occurs on a working Saturday—let the holiday trumps the festival. Banks do NOT open just because it's Saturday and it's a "working" Saturday. 

Eid-e-Milad (Milad-un-Nabi), August 25/26*

Eid-e-Milad is the birthday celebration of the Holy Prophet Muhammad and is considered a Bank Holiday in most parts of India. It is mentioned on two dates in the matrix of the RBI holiday as per the regional centre.

August 25 (Tuesday) – Kerala (Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram) and some centres in Andhra Pradesh (Vijayawada). This is also the first Onam (Uthradom) day in Kerala.

August 26 (Wednesday) for Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Patna, Lucknow, Bhopal, Dehradun, Imphal, Jammu, Kanpur, Nagpur, Raipur, Ranchi, Srinagar and most other centres. This is also the day of Thiruvonam (main Onam day) in Kerala.

This is a calendered event based on the Hijri Calendar and will be confirmed on the day of official moon sighting and can vary by one day. Check near the time of the event. 

Onam in Kerala, August 25–26

Onam 2026 is celebrated for 10 days from Atham (August 16) to Thiruvonam (August 26). In Kerala, specifically, banks closed as part of Onam ceremonies:

The banks in Kerala closed on Tuesday, 25th August, on the occasion of the first Onam / Uthradom. This is also the time of Milad-un-Nabi for the Kerala centres.

Onam day – August 26th (Wednesday), Thiruvonam. Kerala banks closed. This also falls on the auspicious day of Eid-e-Milad, which is celebrated in most parts of India.

The banks will be closed on both the 25th and the 26th of August with different holiday reasons. 

Raksha Bandhan, August 28

Raksha Bandhan (Shravan Purnima) falls on Friday, August 28, 2026. It is a bank holiday in select states, not nationwide.

This month, Tripura has two bank holidays that are unique to the state:

Ker Puja, a traditional festival on the worship of Ker deity, will be celebrated on August 4 (Tuesday).

Birth Anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur (Former Maharaja of the princely state), on August 19 (Wednesday)

Patriots' Day is also celebrated in Manipur on August 13 (Thursday) to remember the unity fighters for the sovereignty of Manipur. All banks in Manipur shut down on this day.

Sikkim celebrates Tendong Lho Rum Faat on 8th August. This is in line with the already bank closure day (2nd Saturday) so there's no extra impact of closure. 

Saturday Rule in August 2026

The 2nd/4th Saturday closure rule applies uniformly across all states under Gazette Notification S.O. 2285 (August 20, 2015). The 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays are regular working days unless a separate holiday falls on that date.

What's paused: Cheque clearing (CTS) is only available on working days. If you set up a NACH auto debit on a holiday, the charges are likely to occur on the first working day of the following week. No in-branch services, counter transactions, demand draft, locker access is possible on closure days.

• The majority of banks have a calendar of their own on their website or mobile applications, and they post it there.

• Contact your branch directly, contact for the latest information particularly in relation to district level holidays

In the case of Eid-e-Milad the date can be fixed only a few days prior to the day, through the process of sighting the moon. If you're looking for final confirmation, look even nearer to the date.
