Ayudha Puja 2026 | Date, Bank Holiday Status

Ayudha Puja 2026 falls on Monday, 19 October 2026. Observed on Maha Navami, the ninth and final day of Navratri, Ayudha Puja is the worship of tools, instruments, vehicles, and machinery as embodiments of the divine. It is one of the most important festivals in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, and is celebrated widely in Kerala and parts of Maharashtra.

What Is Ayudha Puja?, Meaning and Significance

Ayudha Puja (from Sanskrit: Ayudha = weapon/instrument, Puja = worship) is a Hindu festival in which people clean, decorate, and worship the tools, vehicles, and instruments they use in their daily work and livelihood. On this day, no work is performed with these tools, they are set aside for veneration.

The festival has its roots in the ancient tradition of warriors cleaning and worshipping their weapons before battle on the eve of Vijaya Dashami. Today, that tradition extends across all professions: mechanics worship their spanners, surgeons their instruments, drivers their vehicles, writers their pens and laptops, students their books, and businesses their office equipment. Goddess Saraswati (patron of learning), Goddess Lakshmi (patron of wealth), and Goddess Durga/Shakti (patron of power) are invoked across different regional traditions of the same festival.

Ayudha Puja in Tamil Nadu is among the most elaborate observances, vehicles are decorated with flowers and banana leaves, driven to temples, and blessed. Factories and workshops halt production entirely. Government offices and schools display decorated tools and books.

Saraswati Puja on Ayudha Puja Day: In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the night before Vijaya Dashami (i.e., on Navami evening, 19 October 2026) is when books, instruments, and tools are arranged in a display called Golu (in Tamil Nadu) or Bombe Habba (in Karnataka) and formally worshipped. On Vijaya Dashami morning, they are retrieved (Vidyarambham / Vijayadasami Puja).
