Who Was Basavanna?

Basavanna, also revered as Basaveshwara or Vishwaguru Basaveshwara, was a 12th-century philosopher, poet, statesman, and social reformer born in 1131 CE in Bagewadi, present-day Vijayapura district of Karnataka. He rose to become the chief minister of the Kalachuri king Bijjala, but his larger contribution was as the founder of Lingayatism and the Vachana movement, a tradition of devotional poetry and social reform that challenged caste hierarchy, religious ritual, and gender discrimination at a time when each of these was deeply entrenched in Indian society.

He established the Anubhava Mantapa in Kalyana (now Basavakalyan), described as one of the earliest open democratic forums in Indian history, a spiritual assembly where people of all castes, including women, could participate equally in philosophical discussion.

Anubhava Mantapa: Founded in Kalyana (Basavakalyan), this was an open spiritual and intellectual assembly where people of all castes, including women, participated equally, an extraordinary institution for 12th-century India.

Vachana Sahitya: Basavanna composed devotional poems in Kannada known as Vachanas, accessible, direct, and philosophically rich, rejecting Sanskrit exclusivity and making spiritual thought available to ordinary people.

Rejection of caste and untouchability: Basavanna taught that caste has no spiritual meaning, all people carry the Ishtalinga and are equal before Shiva. He formalised this in Lingayat theology.

Kayaka (dignified labour) and Dasoha (community sharing): Two principles Basavanna introduced as ethical foundations, the idea that all honest work is worship, and that surplus should be shared with the community.

Empowerment of women: Women Vachanakaras such as Akka Mahadevi and Neelambike were central participants in the Anubhava Mantapa, a direct result of Basavanna's insistence on equal spiritual standing.

Kudalasangama, Bagalkot district: The confluence of the Krishna and Malaprabha rivers, this was Basavanna's spiritual home and final resting place. Kudalasangama hosts a week-long Basava Jayanti festival drawing lakhs of pilgrims, the largest single-site observance of the day in the country.

Basavakalyan, Bidar district: Site of the Anubhava Mantapa and the centre of Basavanna's reformist work, Basavakalyan holds major processions, lectures, and community meals (Dasoha) in his memory.

Bangalore (Bengaluru): The Karnataka state government organises official programs at Vidhana Soudha and Basavangudi, with cultural events, Vachana recitations, and community gatherings across the city.

Hubli-Dharwad: A major centre of the Lingayat community in North Karnataka, Hubli-Dharwad sees large public processions, talks, and charitable activities marking the day.
