How SBI's Holiday Schedule Works
SBI, as India's largest public sector bank with over 22,000 branches, follows the Reserve Bank of India's annual holiday matrix, published under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Three categories of holidays apply:
National Holidays (uniform, all SBI branches): Republic Day (26 Jan), Independence Day (15 Aug), and Gandhi Jayanti (2 Oct), all SBI branches nationwide are closed, no exceptions.
Second and Fourth Saturdays (uniform, all SBI branches): Per RBI directive, all scheduled commercial banks including SBI close on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month. The 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays are working days.
State-specific Festival Holidays (varies by branch location): Each state government notifies its own list of bank holidays for regional festivals. An SBI branch in Chennai observes different festival holidays from an SBI branch in Lucknow. The month-wise tables above reflect this state variation.
To verify a specific SBI branch's holiday: Visit www.sbi.co.in or call SBI customer care at 1800-11-2211 (toll-free) or 1800-425-3800. SBI publishes its annual holiday circular on its official website each year.
What Happens to Your SBI Loan EMI on a Bank Holiday?
This is the question SBI borrowers search for most, and rarely find answered.
SBI uses the National Automated Clearing House (NACH) to automatically debit EMIs for home loans, personal loans, car loans, and education loans. NACH is operated by NPCI and does not process on bank holidays.
If your SBI EMI due date falls on a bank holiday: The debit is typically processed on the next working day. SBI does not consider this a missed payment, it is a system-level delay, not a default. However, you must ensure your linked account has sufficient balance from the working day before the holiday, because if the debit fails on the next working day for insufficient funds, it does count as a bounce.
Practical steps for SBI loan customers:
- Mark all 2nd/4th Saturdays and major holidays on your calendar for the year
- If your EMI date is the 2nd or 4th of the month, check this page in January and confirm the year's second/fourth Saturday dates
- Maintain balance from the working day before any holiday cluster, especially festival stretches like March 19–22, October 20–21, and November 8–9
