What is in-hand salary?

In-hand salary, also called take-home pay, is the money that reaches your bank account each month. It is lower than your CTC (cost to company) because CTC includes items you never receive as monthly cash, such as the employer's PF contribution, and because tax and your own PF are deducted before you are paid.

How the salary calculator works

1. PF: Employee PF = 12% of basic salary. Employer contributes matching 12% which is part of your CTC. 2. Gross Salary = CTC − Employer PF. 3. Taxable Income: Standard deduction of ₹75,000 subtracted under New Regime (or ₹50k + HRA + 80C in Old Regime). 4. Income Tax computed on FY 2026-27 slabs + 4% health and education cess. 5. Monthly In-hand = (Gross Salary − Employee PF − Income Tax − Professional Tax) ÷ 12.

In-hand salary = (Gross salary − Employee PF − Tax − PT) ÷ 12
Worked example (illustrative)
Working example (illustrative): Annual CTC ₹15,00,000, basic 50% (₹7,50,000), new regime, no professional tax. 1. Employer PF (12% of basic): ₹90,000. Gross salary: ₹14,10,000. 2. Taxable income: ₹14,10,000 − ₹75,000 = ₹13,35,000. 3. Tax on slabs: ₹20,000 + ₹40,000 + ₹20,250 = ₹80,250. Cess at 4%: ₹3,210. Total tax: ₹83,460. 4. Employee PF: ₹90,000. 5. Annual in-hand: ₹14,10,000 − ₹90,000 − ₹83,460 = ₹12,36,540 (~₹1,03,045 per month).

Section 87A Tax Rebate Benefit:

Resident individuals with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh receive a tax rebate of up to ₹60,000, reducing tax payable to zero. Coupled with the ₹75,000 standard deduction, salaried employees earning up to ₹12.75 lakh pay zero income tax! Above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief applies so tax payable doesn't exceed income in excess of ₹12 lakh.

Things that change your in-hand salary

Key levers that decide how much of your CTC lands in your bank account.

Basic salary share

PF is 12% of basic. A higher basic means higher retirement savings but lowers monthly cash in hand.

Tax regime choice

New regime features wider tax slabs and ₹75k standard deduction. Old regime benefits those with heavy HRA and 80C investments.

Variable pay & bonuses

If part of your CTC is an annual performance bonus, regular monthly take-home will be lower than CTC ÷ 12.

Employer salary structure

Allowances, gratuity inclusion, and voluntary PF schemes vary widely between employers for the same CTC.
