What is loan repayment?
Loan repayment is everything you pay back on a loan: the amount you borrowed (the principal) plus the interest charged on it. On most personal loans you repay through equal monthly instalments (EMIs) until the balance reaches zero.
Your total repayment is often much larger than the EMI makes it feel. A ₹3,00,000 loan at 15% a year over 36 months has an EMI of about ₹10,400, but you repay about ₹3,74,386 in all. That is ₹74,386 in interest.
Your balance also falls more slowly than your payments suggest, because each month's interest is paid first. On that same loan, your first 12 EMIs add up to about ₹1,24,795, yet your balance falls by only about ₹85,516. The other ₹39,279 goes to interest. This is why paying extra early in the loan saves the most.
