Plan your loan

Use the numbers you would use when applying.

Lenders usually prefer total EMIs to stay under 40–50% of your net monthly income.

Affordability indicator

Your EMIs, including this loan, would be 29% of your income.

Comfortable

That leaves reasonable room for savings and emergencies.

under 30% Comfortable30–50% Tightover 50% Stretched

These bands are a general rule of thumb, not a lender's rule. Each lender sets its own limits. Your total monthly outgo with this loan is ₹14,603.

What is an EMI?

An EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) is the fixed amount you pay your lender every month until the loan is fully repaid. Each EMI has two parts: a portion that reduces your loan amount (the principal) and a portion that pays the interest for that month.

In the early months, most of your EMI goes towards interest. As your outstanding balance falls, more of each payment goes towards the principal — even though the EMI itself stays the same.

EMI Calculation Formula

Personal loans use the reducing-balance method — each month's interest is charged only on the amount you still owe. EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ [(1 + r)ⁿ − 1] P: loan amount · r: monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) · n: tenure in months

P = loan amount · r = monthly interest rate · n = tenure in months
Worked example (illustrative)
Worked example (illustrative): a ₹2,00,000 loan at 14% a year for 24 months. 1. P = ₹2,00,000 2. r = 14 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.011667 3. n = 24 4. EMI = ₹9,603. Over 24 months you repay ₹2,30,462, of which ₹30,462 is interest. Not included in the EMI: processing fee (often deducted from the amount you receive), 18% GST on that fee, and any optional loan insurance. Check these in your loan's Key Fact Statement.

Factors that affect your EMI

What moves the number — and what you can do about each.

Loan amount

A bigger loan means a bigger EMI at the same rate and tenure. You can borrow only what you need (10% less lowers EMI by ~₹960).

Interest rate

Even a small rate difference adds up over full tenure. A 1 percentage point lower rate (13%) saves about ₹2,261 in interest.

Tenure

A longer tenure lowers the EMI but raises total interest. Pick the shortest tenure you can comfortably afford.

Credit score

Lenders offer lower interest rates to borrowers with stronger credit histories. Check your credit score free before applying.
