What Is Hariyali Teej?

Hariyali Teej, meaning the Green Teej, is celebrated on Shravan Shukla Tritiya (the third day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Shravan), which coincides with the monsoon season when vegetation is at its lushest. Hariyali is Sanskrit for greenness or verdure, the colour and spirit of the monsoon.

The festival is central to the cultural calendar of North Indian women, particularly in Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, UP, and Bihar. Married women observe a day-long fast (nirjala vrat, no food, no water) praying for the health and longevity of their husbands, and unmarried women fast for a good partner. The festival celebrates the union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, Parvati's perseverance through years of penance that finally won Shiva's acceptance.

Key traditions of Hariyali Teej:

  • Wearing green clothing (lehenga, sari, or salwar suit), green symbolises the monsoon, fertility, and marriage
  • Sindhara, the ritual of in-laws sending gifts to daughters-in-law: clothes, bangles, henna, sindoor, and sweets. For newlyweds, Sindhara is especially significant
  • Mehendi (henna) application, the depth of the henna's colour is said to reflect the depth of a husband's love
  • Swinging on jhulas (swings) hung from trees, particularly Banyan trees, which are sacred in Hindu tradition. Swings represent the joy and playfulness of a happy marriage
  • Gidda and folk songs in Punjab; processions of Teej Mata in Rajasthan
  • Puja of clay idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, followed by stories of their union (Teej Katha)
  • Breaking the fast after moonrise, with moon worship and offerings

What Is Kajari Teej (Badi Teej)?

Kajari Teej, also called Badi Teej (the Greater Teej) or Satudi Teej, falls on Krishna Paksha Tritiya in the month of Bhadrapada, approximately three weeks after Hariyali Teej. It is celebrated primarily in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, and Gujarat.

Bundi, Rajasthan is famous for Kajari Teej, the city is elaborately decorated and processions of Teej Mata are taken through the streets, attracting visitors from across the state. The festival is a formal state cultural event in Bundi.

Key distinctions from Hariyali Teej:

  • Kajari Teej focuses on the neem tree, women gather around neem trees, which are worshipped along with Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati
  • The festival celebrates the monsoon's abundance and is associated with Kajal (kohl) traditions
  • Women sing traditional Kajari folk songs, slow, evocative monsoon melodies distinct from the livelier Teeyan songs of Punjab

What Is Hartalika Teej?

Hartalika Teej falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, the third day of the bright fortnight of Bhadrapada month. In 2026, this is 4 September. It is widely celebrated in Rajasthan, UP, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Maharashtra.

The name "Hartalika" comes from Harat (to abduct/take away) and Aalika (female friend), referring to the mythology in which Goddess Parvati's friends took her away to the forest to save her from being married off to Lord Vishnu, so she could continue her penance for Lord Shiva.

Key traditions of Hartalika Teej:

  • The fast is considered among the strictest in the Hindu calendar, a three-day Nirjala Vrat (no food or water) for many women
  • Clay idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are made and worshipped, not immersed in water like most festival idols, but left in the earth
  • Hartalika Teej is traditionally begun at night, with an all-night jagran (vigil) of prayers, storytelling, and singing
  • In Maharashtra, it is observed in a different form, with Gauri Puja
